Directions : Each of these questions contain two statements, Assertion and Reason. Each of these questions also has four alternative choices, only one of which is the correct answer. You have to select one of the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d) given below.
Assertion: If there were no gravitational force, the path of the projected body always be a straight line.
Reason: Gravitational force makes the path of projected body always parabolic.
  • a)
Assertion is correct, reason is correct; reason is a correct explanation for assertion.
  • b)
Assertion is correct, reason is correct; reason is not a correct explanation for assertion
  • c)
Assertion is correct, reason is incorrect
  • d)
Assertion is incorrect, reason is correct.
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Assertion: If there were no gravitational force, the path of the projected body would always be a straight line.
Reason: Gravitational force makes the path of the projected body always parabolic.

Explanation:
The given assertion states that in the absence of gravitational force, the path of a projected body would always be a straight line. On the other hand, the reason provided states that the presence of gravitational force causes the path of a projected body to be parabolic.

Assertion is correct, reason is incorrect:
The assertion is correct because in the absence of gravitational force, there would be no force acting on the projectile to change its path. Therefore, the projectile would continue moving in a straight line with a constant velocity, as stated by the first part of the assertion.

However, the reason provided is incorrect because the presence of gravitational force does not make the path of a projected body always parabolic. The shape of the path of a projectile is determined by various factors such as the initial velocity, angle of projection, and air resistance. In the absence of air resistance, the path of a projectile in a uniform gravitational field is a parabola. But in the presence of air resistance or in non-uniform gravitational fields, the path may deviate from a perfect parabola.

Therefore, the correct answer is option 'c' - Assertion is correct, reason is incorrect. The assertion is correct as the absence of gravitational force would result in a straight-line path for the projected body. However, the reason provided is incorrect as gravitational force does not always make the path of a projected body parabolic.

Upto ordinary heights, the gravitational force remains stationary, since the distance from earth's surface is negligible compared to radius of the earth. Thus the path of projectiles is parabolic.
However as the distance increases, the gravitational field decreases inversely as square of distance from earth. Thus the gravitational field is variable. Under such a gravitational field, the path of projectile is elliptical.
