What type of viruses are produced after the death of E. coli, if a T2 phage having radioactive sulfur infects bacteria growing on normal nutrient medium?
  • a)
    Radioactive capsid and non-radioactive DNA
  • b)
No S35 in protein coat but radioactive sulfur in DNA
  • c)
Non-radioactive capsid as well as genome
  • d)
Radioactive ‘phosphorus’ and ‘sulfur1 in DNA as well as in capsid
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Explanation:

T2 phage is a bacteriophage that infects Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria. When a T2 phage having radioactive sulfur infects bacteria growing on normal nutrient medium, the following happens:

1. Death of E.coli: The T2 phage infects the E.coli bacterium and replicates inside it, causing the bacterial cell to lyse (burst) and die.

2. Production of new viruses: When the bacterial cell lyses, it releases new T2 phages that were produced inside it. These new viruses are now free in the medium and can infect other E.coli bacteria.

3. Non-radioactive capsid and genome: The T2 phage has a protein capsid that encloses its genetic material, which is DNA. In the given scenario, the nutrient medium was normal, i.e., it did not contain any radioactive sulfur or phosphorus. Therefore, the T2 phages produced after the death of E.coli will have non-radioactive capsids as well as genomes.

Therefore, option C is the correct answer.
