Calculation of Darcy Flux

Given:

  • Coefficient of permeability (k) = 40 m/day

  • Horizontal distance between two vertical wells (L) = 800 m

  • Water surface elevation in first well (h1) = 50 m

  • Water surface elevation in second well (h2) = 45 m



Formula:

  • Darcy's Law: Q = kA(h1 - h2)/L



Calculation:

  • Area (A) of the confined aquifer can be calculated by considering the circular cross-section as A = πr^2, where r is the radius of the aquifer.

  • Assuming the radius of the aquifer as 100 m, A = π(100)^2 = 31415.93 m^2

  • Substituting the given values in the formula, we get Q = 40 x 31415.93 x (50 - 45)/800 = 0.25 m^3/day



Therefore, the absolute value of Darcy flux through the aquifer is 0.25 m^3/day, which is equal to 0.25 m/day (since 1 m^3/day = 1 m/day for a confined aquifer).
