Consider the following statements regarding Persistent Organic Polluta...
Exposure to POPs can lead to cancer, damage to central & peripheral nervous systems, diseases of immune system, reproductive disorders and interference with normal infant and child development.
Uniqueness of POPs:
  • POPs are lipophilic, which means that they accumulate in the fatty tissue of living animals and human beings.
  • In fatty tissue, the concentrations can become magnified by up to 70 000 times higher than the background levels.
As you move up the food chain, concentrations of POPs tend to increase so that animals at the top of the food chain such as fish, predatory birds, mammals, and humans tend to have the greatest concentrations of these chemicals.

Consider the following statements regarding Persistent Organic Polluta...
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are toxic chemicals that persist in the environment for long periods of time. They have the property of long-range environmental transport (LRET), which means they can travel long distances through air and water, leading to global contamination.

Health Effects of POPs
Exposure to POPs can have serious health effects on humans and wildlife. These chemicals have been linked to cancer, reproductive disorders, and diseases of the immune system. POPs can bioaccumulate in the fatty tissues of organisms and biomagnify as they move up the food chain.

Biomagnification of POPs
As organisms at the lower trophic levels of the food chain consume contaminated food or water, they accumulate higher concentrations of POPs in their tissues. When predators feed on these contaminated organisms, the POPs are transferred up the food chain. As a result, animals at the top of the food chain, such as predators like eagles or polar bears, tend to have the highest concentrations of POPs due to biomagnification.
Therefore, all three statements are correct. POPs can travel long distances, exposure to them can lead to various health issues, and concentrations of POPs tend to increase as they move up the food chain.
