Statement I: Acid strength increases in the order given as
HF < hcl="" />< hbr="" />< />
Statement II: As the size of the elements F, Cl, Br, I increases down the group, the bond strength of HF, HCl, HBr and HI decreases and so the acid strength increases. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
  • a)
Both statement I and Statement II are true
  • b)
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  • c)

Statement I: Acid strength increases in the order given asHF Statemen...
Explanation:

  • Statement I: Acid strength increases in the order given asHF.

  • Statement II: As the size of the elements F, Cl, Br, I increases down the group, the bond strength of HF, HCl, HBr and HI decreases and so the acid strength increases.

Both statements are true. The acidic strength of an acid is determined by its ability to donate a proton (H+) to a base. The stronger the acid, the more readily it donates a proton. The acidity of hydrogen halides HF, HCl, HBr and HI increases as we move down the group from F to I due to the following reasons:

  • As we move down the group, the size of the halogen atom increases. Due to this, the size of the H-X bond also increases.

  • The bond length between H and X increases down the group, which results in the weakening of the H-X bond. Hence, the strength of the acid increases.

  • The polarity of the bond H-X decreases as we move down the group because the electronegativity of halogens decreases down the group. Hence, the acidic strength increases.

Therefore, both statements I and II are true.

Statement I: Acid strength increases in the order given asHF Statemen...
In the modern periodic table, moving down the group as the size of halogen atom increases, the H – X bond length also increases as a result the bond enthalpy decreases. Hence, The acidic strength also increases.
So, the correct order of acidic strength is
HI > HBr > HCl > HF
