Concept:
When a tuning fork is placed near a sonometer wire, the wire will start to vibrate due to resonance. The wire will vibrate at its natural frequency or a multiple of it. The number of segments in which the wire vibrates depends on the ratio of the frequency of the tuning fork to the natural frequency of the wire.

Calculation:
The ratio of the frequency of the tuning fork to the natural frequency of the wire is given by:

f tuning fork/f wire = 2

f wire = 256 Hz (given)

Therefore, f tuning fork = 2 x f wire = 2 x 256 Hz = 512 Hz

Since the frequency of the tuning fork is equal to the frequency of the wire when it vibrates in two segments, the wire will vibrate in two segments.

Answer:
The wire will vibrate in two segments.

As the wire is forced to have a frequency = 512 = 2 x 256 = 2n, therefore, it must vibrate in two segments.
