Most Upvoted Answer
The bile duct and pancreatic duct open together into the duodenum as ...
Sphincter of Oddi

The opening where the bile duct and pancreatic duct join together to empty their contents into the duodenum is called the hepato-pancreatic duct. This opening is guarded by a ring-like muscle called the Sphincter of Oddi.

Function of Sphincter of Oddi

The Sphincter of Oddi is responsible for regulating the flow of bile and pancreatic juice into the duodenum. It prevents the backflow of duodenal contents into the ducts and also prevents the reflux of bile and pancreatic juices into the gallbladder and pancreas.

Structure of Sphincter of Oddi

The Sphincter of Oddi is a muscular ring located at the end of the common bile duct and pancreatic duct where they join together. It is composed of smooth muscle fibers and is under both involuntary and voluntary control.

Clinical Significance

Disorders of the Sphincter of Oddi can cause a variety of symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and jaundice. These disorders are collectively known as Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction and can be caused by a variety of factors such as inflammation, obstruction, or spasm of the sphincter.

Conclusion

The Sphincter of Oddi is a ring-like muscle located at the end of the common bile duct and pancreatic duct where they join together to empty their contents into the duodenum. It regulates the flow of bile and pancreatic juice into the duodenum, prevents backflow, and can cause clinical symptoms if it malfunctions.
