Effects of Acidic Blood (Low pH) on Hemoglobin and Oxygen Carrying Capacity
  • Oxygen carrying capacity of hemoglobin decreases: When the pH of blood becomes acidic, it means there is an increase in hydrogen ions (H+) concentration. This increase in H+ ions leads to a decrease in blood pH. Hemoglobin's affinity for oxygen decreases in such conditions, leading to a reduced capacity to carry oxygen throughout the body.
  • Bohr Effect: The decrease in oxygen carrying capacity of hemoglobin in acidic conditions is explained by the Bohr Effect. According to this phenomenon, an increase in H+ ions (low pH) reduces the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen, making it easier for oxygen to be released from hemoglobin and delivered to tissues that require it.
  • Impaired cellular function: When the oxygen carrying capacity of hemoglobin decreases, cells may not receive an adequate amount of oxygen to function properly. This can lead to cellular dysfunction and, in severe cases, cell death.
  • Health consequences: Acidic blood can result from various health conditions, such as diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney disease, and respiratory disorders. If left untreated, low blood pH can lead to serious health complications, including organ damage, coma, and even death.
