The diffusion of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) occurs in the respiratory zone of the lungs, specifically in the alveoli, which are not part of the conducting system. The alveoli are the primary site of gas exchange, where oxygen from the inhaled air enters the bloodstream, and carbon dioxide, a waste product, is eliminated from the bloodstream and exhaled.
