Given Data:

Volume of H2O2 solution = 5.0 cm3

Mass of iodine liberated = 0.508 g

To Find:

Volume strength of H2O2 solution

Concept Used:

H2O2 reacts with KI in acidic medium to liberate iodine. The reaction is as follows:

H2O2 + 2KI + H2SO4 → I2 + 2KHSO4 + 2H2O

From the above equation, we can say that 1 mole of H2O2 liberates 1 mole of I2.

The volume strength of H2O2 solution is defined as the volume of oxygen liberated by the decomposition of 1 mL of H2O2 solution.

Solution:

We know that 1 gram-molecule of any gas at STP occupies 22.4 L volume.

Also, 1 mole of O2 is liberated by the decomposition of 1 mole of H2O2.

Therefore, the volume of O2 liberated by the decomposition of 1 mL of H2O2 solution can be given as:

V = 22.4 × (1/2) × (1/1000) = 0.0112 L = 11.2 mL

Now, let us calculate the number of moles of I2 liberated by the reaction:

Molar mass of I2 = 2 × 126.9 g/mol = 253.8 g/mol

Number of moles of I2 = 0.508/253.8 = 0.002 mol

From the equation of the reaction, we can say that 1 mole of H2O2 liberates 1 mole of I2.

Therefore, the number of moles of H2O2 present in 5.0 cm3 of the solution can be given as:

Number of moles of H2O2 = 0.002 mol
