Binary compounds are those compounds which are formed by the combination of two different elements. These elements can be metals or nonmetals.

Formulae of Binary Compounds:
The formulae of binary compounds are written by writing the symbol of the metal first and then the symbol of the nonmetal. The subscripts are written as per the valency of the elements.

Pairs of Elements:
The pairs of elements given in the question are:
(i) Magnesium and nitrogen
(ii) Silicon and oxygen

Predicted Formulae:
(i) Magnesium has a valency of +2 and nitrogen has a valency of -3. Therefore, the formula of the binary compound formed by the combination of magnesium and nitrogen is Mg3N2.
(ii) Silicon has a valency of +4 and oxygen has a valency of -2. Therefore, the formula of the binary compound formed by the combination of silicon and oxygen is SiO2.
