Frequency of Heterozygous Genotype in a Random Mating Population


In a random mating population, the frequency of a recessive phenotype can be used to determine the frequency of the homozygous recessive genotype (aa), as follows:



  • Let p and q be the frequencies of the dominant and recessive alleles, respectively.

  • Since the recessive phenotype is aa, the frequency of aa can be represented by q^2.

  • Therefore, q^2 = 0.09 (given).

  • Thus, q = sqrt(0.09) = 0.3.

  • Since p + q = 1, p = 1 - q = 0.7.



The frequency of the heterozygous genotype (Aa) can be calculated using the Hardy-Weinberg equation:


p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1



  • Substituting the values obtained above, we get: 0.7^2 + 2(0.7)(0.3) + 0.3^2 = 0.51.

  • Therefore, the frequency of the heterozygous genotype (Aa) in this population is 0.51.



It is important to note that the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium assumes that the population is large, randomly mating, and not subject to any evolutionary forces such as mutation, migration, or natural selection. In reality, most populations do not meet these assumptions, and deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium can be used to study evolutionary processes.
