Stratified squamous epithelium is a type of epithelial tissue that is composed of multiple layers of cells. The outermost layer, also known as the apical layer, is composed of squamous cells.
Squamous cells are flat and thin, resembling scales or fish scales. They have a flattened nucleus and are tightly packed together. The outermost layer of stratified squamous epithelium is exposed to the external environment or a body cavity, and its function is to provide protection against mechanical stresses, abrasion, and pathogens.
Examples of stratified squamous epithelium can be found in the skin, the lining of the oral cavity, esophagus, vagina, and anus. The thickness of the stratified squamous epithelium varies depending on the location and function of the tissue. For instance, the skin has a thick stratified squamous epithelium to provide a strong barrier against external damage, while the lining of the oral cavity has a thinner stratified squamous epithelium for easier movement and flexibility.
