Most Upvoted Answer
During respiration, which molecule is utilized and which molecules are...
Utilized molecule: Oxygen
Released molecules: Carbon dioxide, water, and energy

Respiration is the process by which living organisms generate energy by breaking down organic molecules. It involves the utilization of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide, water, and energy. There are two main types of respiration: aerobic respiration, which occurs in the presence of oxygen, and anaerobic respiration, which occurs in the absence of oxygen.

Aerobic respiration:
Aerobic respiration is the most efficient form of respiration and is used by most organisms, including humans. It occurs in the mitochondria and involves the breakdown of glucose to produce energy. The overall equation for aerobic respiration is:

Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy (ATP)

Utilized molecule: Oxygen
During aerobic respiration, oxygen is utilized as the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain. Oxygen combines with electrons and protons to form water in a process called oxidative phosphorylation.

Released molecules: Carbon dioxide, water, and energy
During aerobic respiration, glucose is broken down through a series of steps, including glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. In glycolysis, glucose is converted into two molecules of pyruvate, producing a small amount of ATP and NADH. The pyruvate then enters the mitochondria, where it is further oxidized in the Krebs cycle, generating more ATP and electron carriers (NADH and FADH2). Finally, in oxidative phosphorylation, the electron carriers donate their electrons to the electron transport chain, which generates a large amount of ATP. As electrons move through the electron transport chain, they combine with oxygen and protons to form water. Additionally, carbon dioxide is produced as a byproduct of the Krebs cycle.

Anaerobic respiration:
Anaerobic respiration occurs in the absence of oxygen and is used by some organisms, such as bacteria and yeast. It is less efficient than aerobic respiration and produces less ATP. During anaerobic respiration, alternative electron acceptors, such as nitrate or sulfate, are used instead of oxygen.

In conclusion, during respiration, oxygen is utilized as the final electron acceptor in aerobic respiration, while carbon dioxide, water, and energy (in the form of ATP) are released.

During respiration, which molecule is utilized and which molecules are...
During respiration, the molecule utilized is oxygen, and the molecules released are carbon dioxide, water, and energy.
  • Respiration is the process by which organisms extract energy from organic substances, such as glucose, in the presence of oxygen.
  • In the process of respiration, glucose is partially oxidized in several steps, releasing energy. Oxygen is consumed during the process, and carbon dioxide and water are produced as byproducts.
  • The released energy is utilized by the cell for various metabolic activities, such as ATP synthesis, which is the primary energy currency of cells.
Option a) "Utilized: Oxygen; Released: Carbon dioxide, water, and energy" is the correct answer because it accurately describes the molecules involved in respiration and their respective roles.
