Perimeters of a rectangle and a square are equal. The perimeter of the square is 96 cm and breadth of the rectangle is 4 cm less than one side of the square. Then two times the area (in square cm) of the rectangle is:
  • a)
    1120 square cm.
  • b)
    560 square cm.
  • c)
    960 square cm.

Perimeters of a rectangle and a square are equal. The perimeter of the...
As given in the question the perimeter of the square is 96 cm.
⇒ 4a = 96
⇒ a = 24 (side of the square)
Now, as given in the question the breadth 'b' = 24 - 4
⇒ b =20 cm.
Now, using the formula for the perimeter of the rectangle
⇒ 2(l+b) = 96
⇒ (l+b) = 48
⇒ l +20 = 48
⇒ l = 28 cm. where 'l' is the length of the rectangle.
Now, using the formula for the area of the rectangle
⇒ l × b = 28 × 20
⇒ 560 square cm.
Therefore, two times the area of the square = 2 × 560
⇒ 1120  square cm.
Hence, the correct answer is 1120 square cm.
