1)Sri Lanka has about two crore people, about the same in Haryana. Like other nations in the South Asia region, Sri Lanka has a diverse population. The major social groups are the Sinhala-speakers (74%) and the Tamil speakers (18%).

II) Among Tamils there are two sub groups. Tamil natives of the country are called “Sri Lankan Tamils (13%)”. The rest whose forefathers came from India as plantation workers during colonial period, are called “Indian Tamils”. Sri Lankan Tamils are concentrated in the north and east of the country.

III) Most of the Sinhala speaking people are Buddhist, while most of the Tamils are Hindus or Muslims. These are about 7% Christians, who are both Tamil and Sinhala.

Moors

The Moors are an ethnic group of Arab, Persian and South Asian origin who predominantly follow Islam. They make up around 9% of the population and are mainly concentrated in the eastern and western coastal regions of Sri Lanka. The majority of Moors speak Tamil as their first language.

Other ethnic groups

Other ethnic groups in Sri Lanka include the Burghers, who are of European descent, and the Veddas, who are an indigenous group. These groups make up around 0.7% of the population.
