Enantiomers are non superimposable mirror images.Diastereomers are non superimposable and not related to each other. ( Like mirror images or anything.)

Enantiomers vs Diastereomers


Enantiomers

Enantiomers are stereoisomers that are mirror images of each other and cannot be superimposed on one another. They have the same physical and chemical properties, except for their interaction with polarized light. Enantiomers rotate the plane of polarized light in opposite directions and are therefore optically active.

Diastereomers

Diastereomers are stereoisomers that are not mirror images of each other and have different physical and chemical properties. They occur when a molecule has two or more chiral centers and the relative configuration of some of the stereocenters is different. They do not rotate plane-polarized light in opposite directions and are therefore not optically active.

Differences

There are several differences between enantiomers and diastereomers:


  • Enantiomers are mirror images of each other, while diastereomers are not.

  • Enantiomers have identical physical and chemical properties, while diastereomers have different properties.

  • Enantiomers have the same magnitude of optical rotation but rotate plane-polarized light in opposite directions, while diastereomers are not optically active or have a different magnitude of optical rotation.

  • Enantiomers have the same melting and boiling points, while diastereomers have different melting and boiling points.

  • Enantiomers have different biological activity, while diastereomers may have different or similar biological activity.



Examples

An example of enantiomers is L-alanine and D-alanine, which are mirror images of each other. An example of diastereomers is cis- and trans-1,2-dibromoethene, which have different physical and chemical properties due to their different stereochemistry.
