India is said to experience comparatively milder winters as compared ...
  • Statement 1 is incorrect. Continentality of any area leads to extreme climatic conditions. Thus, continentality cannot be a reason for winters being mild as they will only aggravate the existing climatic conditions and not balance it.
  • Statement 2 and 3 are correct. India has Himalayas to the north, which have an average height of about 6,000 metres. The Himalayas therefore act as a barrier to cold winds coming from Tibet and other colder regions in Central Asia (Gobi Desert etc). It is because of these mountains that the subcontinent experiences comparatively milder winters as compared to central Asia.
  • India’s vast coastline leads to a moderating influence on India’s climate and thus results in milder winters as compared to Central Asia. The Tropic of Cancer also passes through the middle of the country from the Rann of Kachchh in the west to Mizoram in the east. Almost half of the country, lying south of the Tropic of Cancer, belongs to the tropical area.
  • All the remaining area, north of the Tropic, lies in the sub-tropics. Therefore, India’s climate has characteristics of tropical as well as subtropical climates. This also leads to milder winters in India.

India is said to experience comparatively milder winters as compared ...
B. 2 and 3 only: The Himalayas in the north and a vast coastline are the correct reasons for India experiencing comparatively milder winters as compared to Central Asia.

The Himalayas in the north:
- The Himalayas act as a natural barrier that prevents cold winds from Central Asia from entering the Indian subcontinent. These mountains act as a shield, blocking the cold air masses and preventing them from reaching the plains of North India. As a result, the temperatures in North India are relatively higher during winters.

A vast coastline:
- India has a vast coastline that stretches for thousands of kilometers. The presence of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal along the western and eastern coasts of India respectively helps in moderating the winter temperatures. The warm ocean currents from these seas have a warming effect on the coastal regions, preventing them from experiencing extreme cold temperatures during winters.

The continentality of North India:
- The continentality of North India is not a correct reason for India experiencing milder winters. Continentality refers to the effect of being located in the interior of a large landmass, away from the moderating influence of the ocean. In general, areas with high continentality experience more extreme temperatures, including colder winters and hotter summers. However, in the case of India, the presence of the Himalayas and the coastline override the continentality factor and result in milder winters.

Therefore, option b) 2 and 3 only is the correct answer. The presence of the Himalayas in the north and a vast coastline contribute to India experiencing comparatively milder winters as compared to Central Asia.
