Originally named Shridhar Balwant Jodhpurkar, Baba Ramchandra was born in a small village in Gwalior Estate (1864). Concealing his identity as a Maharashtrian Brahmin, he stayed for about 13 long years in Fiji as an indentured labourer and mobilized indentured labourers for their emancipation.
  • Upon being called back in 1917 by Bal Gangadhar Tilak, he returned to India. In order to seek resolution of their grievances, a Kisan Sabha was formed at the Pratapgarh district, with Baba Ramchandra as the leader. His activities were noticed by the British authorities and he was warned to stop his agrarian propaganda. Ramchandra, on the other hand, sought to broaden the movement and link it to the national freedom movement. Later in Awadh district of United Provinces, Baba Ramchandra organized a peasant militancy from 1918-19 against the oppressive taluqdars which was harnessed by the UP Kisan Sabha which was formed in 1918. The Kisan movement under Baba Ramchandra was basically a tenant and small zamindars‘ movement against big landlords and taluqdars.
  • The movement developed a 14 demands-cum-oath charter known as the  ̳Kisan Pledge‘, which every participant was expected to take an oath on. Among other things, the demand charter included the refusal to pay more than the recorded rent, receipts for the rents paid, refusal to do begari and pay nazrana etc. His unique methodology of peasant mobilization constituted recitation of Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas. His love for the peasantry and sympathy for their cause is reflected in the last line of his correspondence, wherein he signed himself as Oudh Kisan Sevak. He was imprisoned on several occasions for carrying out anti-government activities. Hence, option (a) is the correct answer. Additional Information Sahajanand Saraswati was an ascetic, a nationalist and a peasant leader of India. His social and political activities focussed mostly on Bihar in the initial days. He was the founder of All India Kisan Sabha.
  • Saraswati organized the Bakasht Movement in Bihar from 1937 to 1938. "Bakasht" means self- cultivated. The movement was against the eviction of tenants from Bakasht lands by zamindars and led to the passing of the Bihar Tenancy Act and the Bakasht Land Tax. He also led the successful struggle in the Dalmia Sugar Mill at Bihta, where peasant-worker unity was the most important characteristic. Gogineni Ranga Nayukulu, better known as N. G. Ranga was an Indian freedom fighter, parliamentarian, and Kisan (farmer) leader. He was an exponent of the peasant philosophy and considered the father of the Indian Peasant Movement after Swami Sahajanand Saraswati. Ranga joined the freedom movement inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's clarion call in 1930. He led the ryot agitation in 1933.
  • Three years later, he launched the Kisan Congress party. He held historic discussions with Gandhiji on the demand for a rythu‐coolie state. He wrote a book,  ̳Bapu Blesses‘ regarding his discussions with Gandhi. Ranga was one of the founders of the Congress Socialist Party and was a member of its National Executive and drafting Committee in 1934. After joining the Congress party Ranga was very active politically both at centre and state level. He was the first general secretary of All India Kisan Sabha. Indulal Kanaiyalal Yagnik (1892 –1972) was an Indian independence activist, a leader of the All India Kisan Sabha and one who led the Mahagujarat Movement, which spearheaded the demand for the separate statehood for Gujarat on 8 August 1956.
