Epithelial tissue is scutoid shaped, tightly packed and form a continuous sheet. It has almost no intercellular spaces. All epithelia is usually separated from underlying tissues by an extracellular fibrous basement membrane. The basal lamina consists of a mixture of collagen, laminin, perlecan, entactin. The basal lamina helps to attach and anchor the cells to the underlying connective tissue.

Basal Lamina
- Composed of glycoproteins secreted by epithelial cells
- Forms the upper layer of the basement membrane
- Helps in adhesion of epithelial cells to the underlying connective tissue

Fibrous Lamina
- Composed of collagen or reticular fibers suspended in mucopolysaccharide of underlying connective tissue
- Provides structural support and strength to the basement membrane
- Acts as a filter for molecules passing between the epithelial cells and connective tissue

Both Basal Lamina and Fibrous Lamina
- Together, they form the basement membrane which separates the epithelial tissue from the underlying connective tissue
- Provide a barrier and support for the epithelial cells
- Help in the exchange of nutrients and waste products between the epithelial cells and the bloodstream
In conclusion, the basement membrane is made up of both the basal lamina and fibrous lamina, which work together to support, protect, and facilitate the functioning of epithelial tissues.
