  • The earliest centre of revolutionary activities outside India was started in England itself. Shyamji Krishnavarma, a Barrister from Gujarat, who had settled down in England in 1897 started a revolutionary society called the Indian Home Rule Society (1905) there. Hence statements 1 and 2 are correct.
  • Shyamaji Krishnavarma first came to Britain as a Sanskrit scholar and assistant to Professor Monier Williams at Oxford. He graduated from Balliol College in 1883 and was called to the Bar in 1884. In 1881, he attended the Berlin Congress of Orientalists. He created scholarships for Indian students to study in Britain from 1905, on the condition that they would not work for the British Government. Krishnavarma soon began to publish a journal called The Indian Sociologist which was the mouthpiece of the Home Rule Society. He also instituted six lectureships of rupees 1,000 each to attract Indian scholars who might like to visit England to preach the ideas of Indian nationalism. He was able to assemble a band of Indian revolutionaries the most prominent, of whom was Lala Hardayal, V.D. Savarkar and Madanlal Dhingra, Madame Cama, a Parsi lady and Birendranath Chattopadhyay were also associated with this group. Their paper, the Indian Sociologist began to preach the ideal of complete independence for India to be achieved by passive resistance and non-cooperation of an extreme form. They did not also rule out the use of violence to achieve their end. Hence statement 3 is correct.
  • The activities of these Indian extremists soon attracted the attention of the British government. The Times of London and some other British newspapers attracted the activities of these extremists in their columns. A member of the British House of Commons put a question before the Parliament enquiring whether the government intended to take any action against these people. Krishnavarma later moved to Paris. The leadership of the Indian house of London then passed to Savarkar.
