Formation of Male Gametes in Angiosperms

Angiosperms are flowering plants that reproduce sexually. They produce male and female gametes for sexual reproduction. Microsporogenesis

Microsporogenesis is the process by which microspores are formed in the anthers of angiosperms. It involves the following stages:

1. Formation of Microspore Mother Cells

The microspore mother cells (MMC) are diploid cells that are produced by the division of cells in the anther wall. The MMC undergoes meiosis to produce haploid microspores.

2. Meiosis

Meiosis is a process of nuclear division that reduces the chromosome number by half. It involves two successive divisions, meiosis I and meiosis II. During meiosis I, the homologous chromosomes pair up and exchange genetic material by crossing over. This results in the formation of two haploid cells with a mixed genetic material. During meiosis II, the sister chromatids separate, resulting in the formation of four haploid cells.

3. Formation of Microspores

After meiosis, the MMC divides to produce four haploid microspores. Each microspore is enclosed in a tough wall called a sporopollenin wall. The microspore is also called a pollen grain.

Microgametogenesis

Microgametogenesis is the process by which the male gametes are formed from the pollen grain. It involves the following stages:

1. Activation of Pollen Grain

When the pollen grain lands on the stigma of the female flower, it absorbs water and swells. This activates the pollen grain and initiates the process of germination.

2. Germination of Pollen Grain

The germination of pollen grain involves the growth of a pollen tube from the pollen grain. The pollen tube grows down the style of the female flower towards the ovary. The tip of the pollen tube is guided by chemical signals from the female flower.

3. Formation of Generative Cell

During the growth of the pollen tube, the cytoplasm of the pollen grain divides to form two cells, the vegetative cell and the generative cell. The vegetative cell provides the energy for the growth of the pollen tube, while the generative cell divides to form the male gametes.

4. Division of Generative Cell

The generative cell divides to form two haploid male gametes. These gametes are genetically identical and are released from the pollen tube into the female flower.
