Homologous chromosome attraction in different stages of meiosis:

Leptotene:
Leptotene is the first stage of meiosis where chromosomes condense and become visible. At this stage, homologous chromosomes do not show attraction towards each other.

Zygotene:
In the Zygotene stage, homologous chromosomes begin to pair up and align with each other. This process is known as synapsis, where the chromosomes form structures called synaptonemal complexes. The attraction between homologous chromosomes becomes evident during this stage.

Pachytene:
During the Pachytene stage, the synaptonemal complexes are fully formed, holding the paired homologous chromosomes together. This is the stage where crossing over occurs, leading to the exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes. The attraction between homologous chromosomes is strong in this stage.

Diplotene:
In the Diplotene stage, the homologous chromosomes start to separate but remain attached at points called chiasmata, where crossing over occurred. The attraction between homologous chromosomes begins to weaken as they prepare to segregate during the next stages of meiosis.

In conclusion, the stage where attraction between homologous chromosomes is most evident is the Zygotene stage, where synapsis occurs, and chromosomes align and pair up. This attraction is essential for the proper pairing and exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes during meiosis.
