Coelom Formation
The body cavity formed by the splitting of the mesoderm is called the coelom.

Definition of Coelom
The coelom is a fluid-filled body cavity that is lined by mesoderm. It provides space for organs to be suspended and protected within the body.

Formation of Coelom
During embryonic development, the mesoderm splits into two layers - the somatic mesoderm and the splanchnic mesoderm. The space between these two layers eventually expands to form the coelom.

Importance of Coelom
The coelom allows for greater flexibility and mobility of internal organs. It also provides a space for the circulation of fluids, nutrients, and wastes.

Types of Body Cavities
- Pseudo-coelom: A body cavity that is only partially lined by mesoderm.
- Coelom: A true body cavity that is completely lined by mesoderm.
- Hemocoel: A body cavity that is filled with blood and is not lined by mesoderm.
- Blastocoel: A fluid-filled cavity in the blastula stage of embryonic development.
