Choose the correct statement.
  • a)
There is a complete breakdown of glucose during fermentation.
  • b)
Pyruvate is formed in the mitochondrial matrix.
  • c)
During the conversion of succinyl CoA to succinic acid, a molecule of ATP is synthesised.
  • d)
Oxygen is vital in respiration for the removal of hydrogen.
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Choose the correct statement.a)There is a complete breakdown of glucos...
  • Oxygen sits at the end of the electron transport chain, where it accepts electrons, hydrogen and picks up protons to form water.
  • Pyruvate is formed in the cytoplasm.
  • During fermentation glucose is partially broken down by glycolysis.
  • During the conversion of succinyl CoA to succinic acid a molecule of GTP is synthesized.
So, the correct option is 'Oxygen is vital in respiration for removal of hydrogen'.

Choose the correct statement.a)There is a complete breakdown of glucos...
Explanation:
Respiration is a process where glucose is broken down to release energy. There are two types of respiration: aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration.

Aerobic respiration:
Aerobic respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen. It takes place in the mitochondria of the cell. The following are the steps involved in aerobic respiration:

1. Glycolysis: It is the first step of aerobic respiration. Here, glucose is converted to pyruvate. This process takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell.

2. Pyruvate oxidation: In this step, pyruvate is converted to acetyl-CoA. It takes place in the mitochondrial matrix.

3. Krebs cycle: It is also known as the citric acid cycle. In this step, acetyl-CoA is converted to CO2. ATP is also synthesised in this step.

4. Electron transport chain: It is the final step of aerobic respiration. Here, the energy released during the previous steps is used to synthesise ATP.

Anaerobic respiration:
Anaerobic respiration occurs in the absence of oxygen. It takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell. The following are the steps involved in anaerobic respiration:

1. Glycolysis: It is the first step of anaerobic respiration. Here, glucose is converted to pyruvate.

2. Fermentation: In this step, pyruvate is converted to either lactic acid or ethanol. ATP is also synthesised in this step.

Answer:
Oxygen is vital in respiration for the removal of hydrogen. In aerobic respiration, oxygen is the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain. In the absence of oxygen, the electron transport chain cannot proceed, leading to a decrease in ATP synthesis.
