Chemical Reaction:
A chemical reaction is a process that leads to the transformation of one set of chemical substances to another. It involves the breaking and forming of chemical bonds to create new substances.

Observations indicating a chemical reaction:
  • Formation of a Precipitate: When two clear solutions are mixed and a solid substance forms, it indicates a chemical reaction has occurred.
  • Color Change: If the color of the reactants changes to a different color after mixing, it suggests a chemical reaction has taken place.
  • Evolution of Gas: When bubbles or a gas is released during a reaction, it is a sign that a chemical reaction is happening.
  • Change in Temperature: If the temperature of the reaction mixture changes significantly (gets hot or cold), it indicates a chemical reaction has occurred.

Examples:
  • Precipitate Formation: Mixing silver nitrate (AgNO3) with sodium chloride (NaCl) results in the formation of a white precipitate of silver chloride (AgCl):
    AgNO3 (aq) + NaCl (aq) → AgCl (s) + NaNO3 (aq)
  • Color Change: Combining potassium iodide (KI) and lead(II) nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) leads to the formation of a yellow precipitate of lead(II) iodide (PbI2):
    Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + 2KI (aq) → PbI2 (s) + 2KNO3 (aq)
  • Evolution of Gas: Mixing hydrochloric acid (HCl) with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) produces carbon dioxide gas:
    HCl (aq) + NaHCO3 (s) → NaCl (aq) + H2O (l) + CO2 (g)
  • Change in Temperature: The reaction between magnesium (Mg) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) is exothermic, resulting in a noticeable increase in temperature:
    Mg (s) + 2HCl (aq) → MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)

By observing these changes, one can determine if a chemical reaction has occurred based on the given criteria.
