Answers to Geography Questions:

1) Measures to control land degradation:

  • Contour farming: Cultivating crops across the slope of the land helps to reduce soil erosion by slowing down the flow of water.

  • Terracing: Building terraces on steep slopes can prevent soil erosion by reducing runoff and providing flat surfaces for cultivation.

  • Planting trees: Trees can help to stabilize soil, reduce wind erosion and improve soil fertility. They also provide shade and reduce heat stress in crops.

  • Conservation tillage: This involves reducing the amount of tillage or plowing done on the land to reduce soil disturbance and erosion.

  • Use of fertilizers and soil amendments: Correct application of fertilizers and soil amendments can improve soil fertility and structure, leading to healthier plants and reduced soil erosion.

2) Features of arid soil:

  • Low organic matter: Arid soils have low amounts of organic matter due to the dry conditions which limit the growth of vegetation and the decomposition of organic matter.

  • High salinity: Arid soils are often high in salt due to the accumulation of salts from irrigation or atmospheric deposition.

  • Low water-holding capacity: Arid soils have a low capacity to hold water due to the low organic matter content and high level of compaction.

3) Alluvial soil in India:

The northern plains of India are made up of alluvial soil. This region is formed by the deposition of sediments carried down from the Himalayas by the rivers Ganges, Brahmaputra, and their tributaries. The alluvial soil in this region is fertile and well-suited for agriculture.

4) Factors responsible for the formation of soil:

  • Parent material: This refers to the type of rock or sediment that is weathered to form soil. Different types of parent material lead to different soil types.

  • Climate: Climate influences the rate of weathering and the type of vegetation that grows in an area, which in turn affects the type of soil that forms.

  • Topography: The slope and drainage patterns of an area can affect the accumulation or loss of soil, leading to variations in soil type.

In addition to these factors, biological activity and time also play a role in soil formation. Biological activity, such as the actions of plants, animals, and microorganisms, can help to break down parent material and create organic matter. Over time, this process leads to the development of distinct soil horizons and layers.

(ii) Various forces of nature such as change in temperature, actions of running water, wind and glaciers, activities of decomposers, etc. contribute to the formation of soil. (iii) Chemical and organic changes which take place in the soil are equally important.
