Directions: In the following questions, a statement of assertion is followed by a statement of reason. Mark the correct choice as:
Assertion : Neurons are excitable cells.
Reason : The membrane of neurons in a depolarised state is responsible for excitability.
  • a)
If both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.
  • b)
If both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.
  • c)
If Assertion is true but Reason is false.
  • d)
If both Assertion and Reason are false.
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Assertion: Neurons are excitable cells.
Neurons, as the fundamental units of the nervous system, possess the unique property of excitability. This means they can respond to stimuli and generate electrical impulses, known as action potentials. Their ability to transmit signals is crucial for communication within the nervous system.

Reason: The membrane of neurons in a depolarised state is responsible for excitability.
The reason provided correctly identifies that the neuron's membrane, when depolarized, plays a key role in its excitability. Depolarization occurs when there is a change in the electrical charge across the neuron's membrane, primarily due to the influx of sodium ions (Na+). This alteration in membrane potential is essential for the generation and propagation of action potentials, enabling neurons to transmit signals rapidly.

Explanation of the Correct Answer: Option A
- **Both statements are true**: Neurons are indeed excitable cells, and their membrane's depolarized state is what enables this excitability.
- **Correct explanation**: The reason provided explains how and why neurons exhibit excitability. It links the characteristic of neurons (their ability to be excitable) directly to the state of their membrane (depolarization), making the reason a valid explanation of the assertion.
In summary, both the assertion and reason are accurate and the reason effectively clarifies the assertion, supporting the selection of option 'A' as the correct answer.

Neurons are excitable cells. Excitability is the ability of nerve cells to generate an electrical impulse in response to stimulus. When a nerve fibre receives stimulus, the potential across the membrane is reversed at the point of excitation. It means, the inner side of plasma membrane of the cell becomes more positively charged with respect to the outer side of plasma membrane. This change in polarity is called action potential. This condition of reverse polarity is said to be depolarised.
