Assertion: The breaking of the C- C bonds of complex compound through ...
Assertion:
During respiration, the breaking of the C-C bonds of complex compounds through oxidation within the cells releases a large amount of energy.

Reason:
The compounds that are oxidized during respiration are called respiratory substrates.

Explanation:
- Assertion Explanation: Respiration is a metabolic process in cells where organic molecules are oxidized to produce energy. This process involves breaking down complex compounds such as carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into simpler molecules, releasing energy in the form of ATP. The breaking of C-C bonds within these compounds is a crucial step in the release of energy during respiration.
- Reason Explanation: The compounds that are oxidized during respiration and serve as a source of energy are known as respiratory substrates. These substrates are broken down through oxidation to release energy for the cell's metabolic processes.
Therefore, both the assertion and reason are true in this scenario. However, the reason provided does not directly explain why the breaking of C-C bonds within complex compounds leads to the release of energy during respiration. This is why option B, "If both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion," is the correct answer.

Respiration is an energy releasing enzymatically controlled process that involves a step-wise oxidative breakdown of food substances inside living cells. Food reaches every cell of an organism for respiration to take place. During cellular respiration, the oxidation of food substances takes place. This process occurs in cytoplasm and mitochondria. During oxidation, chemical bonds (e.g., C - C bonds) are broken that releases energy and forms a number of biochemical intermediates. This energy is used in the synthesis of ATP. Those organic substances which are oxidised during respiration to liberate energy inside the living cells are respiratory substrate. The common respiratory substrates are carbohydrates, proteins, fats and organic acids. the most common respiratory substrate is glucose.
