In human females, the process that produces mature eggs is called oogenesis. Just one egg is produced from the four haploid cells that result from meiosis.

Three polar bodies may form during oogenesis. These polar bodies will not form mature gametes.

Oogenesis begins before birth and is not completed until after fertilization. Oogenesis begins when oogonia, which are the immature eggs that form in the ovaries before birth and have the diploid number of chromosomes, undergo mitosis to form primary oocytes, also with the diploid number. Oogenesis proceeds as a primary oocyte undergoes the first cell division of meiosis to form secondary oocytes with the haploid number of chromosomes. A secondary oocyte only undergoes the second meiotic cell division to form a haploid ovum if it is fertilized by a sperm.

Oogenesis is the process of formation of female gametes, ova or eggs. It involves several stages and produces one functional egg and three polar bodies.

Stages of Oogenesis

1. Primordial Follicle Stage: The process of oogenesis begins before birth. The primordial germ cells (PGCs) undergo mitosis to form primary oocytes, which are surrounded by a layer of cells called follicular cells to form primordial follicles.

2. Primary Follicle Stage: At puberty, some of the primordial follicles grow and develop into primary follicles. The primary oocyte inside the primary follicle begins meiosis I but gets arrested in the prophase stage.

3. Secondary Follicle Stage: The primary follicles further develop into secondary follicles with the help of follicular cells. The primary oocyte completes meiosis I and forms the secondary oocyte and the first polar body.

4. Tertiary Follicle Stage: The secondary oocyte is released from the ovary during ovulation and enters the fallopian tube. If fertilization occurs, the secondary oocyte completes meiosis II and forms the mature ovum and the second polar body.

Outcome of Oogenesis

- Each diploid oocyte produces one functional egg and three polar bodies.
- The egg is large and contains nutrients required for the development of the embryo.
- The polar bodies are small cells that do not contain nutrients and are eventually degraded.
- The polar bodies are produced as a result of the uneven division of cytoplasm during meiosis and ensure that the egg receives almost all the cytoplasm and nutrients.
