The value of TV is about 500 ml for an average adult human male but only some part of it enters lung alveoli and rest of it fills respiratory passage. What should be the distribution ratio for alveolar volume /respiratory passage volume:

  • a)
    2:3

  • b)
    3:7

The value of TV is about 500 ml for an average adult human male but on...
The approx. 500 mL i.e. a healthy man can inspire or expire approximately 6000 to 8000 mL of air per minute. Additional volume of air, a person can inspire by a forcible inspiration. This average 2500 mL to 3000mL.
Alveolar volume/ respiratory passage volume also called as residual volume. It is the amount of air that remains in a person's lungs after fully exhaling. They are considered to be 1 to 1.2 L, but these values are dependent on many factors and its ratio will be 7:3.

350 ml reaches alveoli which is the exchanging part of gases and 150 ml remains in conducting part ...therefore the ratio of alveolar volume to that of respiratory passage volume will be 350/150= 7:3

Distribution Ratio for Alveolar Volume/Respiratory Passage Volume

TV or Tidal Volume is the amount of air that an average adult human male inhales and exhales during normal breathing. The value of TV is about 500 ml.

However, only a part of this air enters the lung alveoli where gas exchange takes place, while the rest of it fills the respiratory passage.

The distribution ratio for alveolar volume / respiratory passage volume determines the proportion of air that enters the alveoli and the respiratory passage.

Option D: 7:3 is the correct answer as it means that out of the total TV of 500 ml, 70% or 350 ml enters the alveoli while 30% or 150 ml fills the respiratory passage.

This distribution ratio is important because it affects the efficiency of gas exchange in the lungs. If too much air fills the respiratory passage and not enough enters the alveoli, the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide may be insufficient, leading to respiratory problems.

Therefore, a ratio of 7:3 ensures that a sufficient amount of air enters the alveoli for efficient gas exchange to occur.
