Thalassemia can be classified according to which chain of the haemoglobin molecule is affected. In α Thalassemia, production of α globin chain is affected while in β Thalassemia, production of β globin chain is affected. α Thalassemia is controlled by two closely linked genes HBA1 and HBA2 on chromosome 16 of each parent and it is observed due to mutation or deletion of one or more of the four genes. The more genes affected, the less alpha globin molecules produced. While β Thalassemia is controlled by a single gene HBB on chromosome 11 of each parent and occurs due to mutation of one or both the genes.

Understanding Thalassemia
Thalassemia is a group of inherited blood disorders characterized by reduced hemoglobin production, leading to anemia. The two main types are Alpha Thalassemia and Beta Thalassemia, each associated with different genetic mutations.
Key Points on Alpha and Beta Thalassemia
- Alpha Thalassemia: This condition arises from mutations in the genes located on the 16th chromosome. It typically involves the deletion of one or more of the four alpha-globin genes.
- Beta Thalassemia: This condition is caused by mutations on the 11th chromosome, specifically affecting the beta-globin genes.
Why Option 'C' is Correct
- Linked Genes: The statement "Alpha Thalassemia- linked genes" is correct as it emphasizes that both types of thalassemia result from mutations in specific genes that are linked and inherited in a Mendelian fashion.
- Qualitative Trait: Thalassemia is indeed a qualitative trait because it is characterized by qualitative changes in the hemoglobin produced, rather than quantitative ones.
Conclusion
In summary, the correct match is option 'C', highlighting that Alpha Thalassemia is associated with linked genes. This understanding is crucial for recognizing the genetic basis of thalassemia and its implications for diagnosis and treatment.
