Acetyl-CoA then enters the citric acid cycle, where it undergoes a series of reactions that result in the production of three molecules of NADH, one molecule of FADH2, one molecule of GTP (which can be used to generate ATP), and two molecules of CO2. The production of NADH and FADH2 is important as they will later donate electrons to the electron transport chain.

- Electron Transport Chain:
The electron transport chain is located in the inner mitochondrial membrane and is responsible for the majority of ATP synthesis during aerobic respiration. The NADH and FADH2 produced in the citric acid cycle donate their electrons to the electron transport chain. As electrons pass through the electron transport chain, they create a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane. This gradient is used by ATP synthase to produce ATP.

During the aerobic oxidation of one pyruvate molecule:
- One molecule of CO2 is released during the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl-CoA.
- Two molecules of CO2 are released during the citric acid cycle.
- A total of four molecules of CO2 are released during the aerobic oxidation of one pyruvate molecule.

Since each molecule of CO2 contains one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms, the total number of oxygen atoms required for the aerobic oxidation of one pyruvate molecule is 4 x 2 = 8.
