The life span of adult erythrocytes is 120 days. RBCs in term neonate will survive between 60 and 90 days. Erythrocytes from premature neonates have considerably shorter life spans, ranging from 35 to 50 days. A hemolytic process causes RBCs to be destroyed before the end of their expected life spans.
