The vertebral column, also known as the spinal column, is a complex structure that is derived from the embryonic mesoderm. It is responsible for providing support to the body, protecting the spinal cord, and allowing for a range of movements.


Embryonic development



  • The vertebral column is formed from the somites, which are the embryonic precursors of the muscles, vertebrae, and ribs.

  • The somites are derived from the paraxial mesoderm, which is located on either side of the neural tube.

  • During the process of somitogenesis, the paraxial mesoderm undergoes segmentation, forming a series of paired somites along the length of the embryo.

  • Each somite gives rise to a pair of sclerotomes, which are the embryonic precursors of the vertebrae.

  • The sclerotomes migrate around the neural tube and the notochord, eventually forming the cartilaginous structures that will later ossify into the vertebral bodies and arches.



Anatomical structure



  • The vertebral column is composed of 33 individual vertebrae, which are stacked on top of each other and separated by intervertebral discs.

  • The vertebrae can be divided into five regions: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal.

  • The cervical region consists of seven vertebrae, the thoracic region consists of 12 vertebrae, and the lumbar region consists of five vertebrae.

  • The sacral region consists of five fused vertebrae, while the coccygeal region consists of four fused vertebrae.

  • The vertebral column also includes the spinal cord, which runs through the vertebral canal and is surrounded by protective layers of meninges.



Functions



  • The vertebral column provides support to the body, allowing us to stand upright and maintain our posture.

  • It protects the spinal cord, which is a crucial component of the nervous system.

  • The vertebral column also allows for a range of movements, including flexion, extension, lateral bending, and rotation.

  • Finally, the vertebral column plays a role in shock absorption, helping to dissipate forces that are transmitted through the body during activities such as jumping or running.
