Why hydrogen is the only non-metal present in reactivity series?
Most Upvoted Answer
Why hydrogen is the only non-metal present in reactivity series?
Hydrogen, although is a non metal, can acquire both positive and negative charge .. however it is present in the reactivity series to make it easier for u to differentiate a more reactive metal ( that can react with hydrogen in water) than less reactive metals ( which can't react with hydrogen in water)

Why hydrogen is the only non-metal present in reactivity series?
Why is hydrogen the only non-metal present in the reactivity series?
Hydrogen, despite being a non-metal, is the only non-metal present in the reactivity series due to its unique properties and behavior.
  • Electron Configuration: Hydrogen has one electron and one proton in its atomic structure, making it similar to the alkali metals in terms of having one valence electron. This allows hydrogen to exhibit both metal-like and non-metallic properties, depending on the conditions.
  • Reactivity: Hydrogen can react with both metals and non-metals, forming compounds like hydrides with metals and covalent compounds with non-metals. This versatility in reactions places hydrogen in a unique position in the reactivity series.
  • Position in the Periodic Table: Hydrogen is located at the top of the periodic table in group 1, but it is not considered a metal due to its non-metallic properties. This positioning contributes to its distinct behavior in terms of reactivity.
  • Isotopes: Hydrogen has three isotopes - protium, deuterium, and tritium. These isotopes have different properties and reactivities, further adding to the complexity of hydrogen's behavior in chemical reactions.

In summary, hydrogen's unique electron configuration, reactivity, position in the periodic table, and isotopic variations make it the only non-metal present in the reactivity series.
