Gene regulation governing lactose operon of E.coli that involves the lac I gene product is :
  • a)
Feedback inhibition because excess of β - galactosidase can switch off transcription
  • b)
Positive and inducible because it can be induced by lactose
  • c)
negative and inducible because repressor protein prevents transcription
  • d)
negative and repressible because repressor protein prevents transcription
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

Answer should be C because Negative and inducible because repressor protein prevents transcriptionLac I gene produces an inhibitor or repressor and negative regulation of lac operon is induced. The repressor binds to the operator gene and stops its working. Repressor is meant to block the operator gene so that structural genes are unable to form mRNA thus stopping the transcription of genes.

Generally lac-operon is off so transcription and translation is also stop and no protein formation.when availability of foreign bacteria for lactose then lac-operon is on. Inducer is contact with active repressor then change in structure of repressor and remove from operator site and start spontaneous transcription and translation when available of inducer and when investe of inducer. Then repressor is active and bind with operator site and stop of transcription and translation so lactose is work as Inducer in lac-operon.
