Polarisation is the property of a material that describes the alignment of its constituent particles (such as atoms or molecules) in response to an external electric field. When an electric field is applied to a material, the electric field exerts a force on the charged particles within the material, causing them to move and align themselves in a particular direction. This alignment results in a net dipole moment, which is called polarisation.
The relationship between polarisation and electric field is a linear relationship. The polarisation of a material is directly proportional to the electric field applied to it. In other words, the greater the electric field, the greater the polarisation. Mathematically, this relationship is expressed as P = χE, where P is the polarisation, E is the electric field, and χ is the electric susceptibility of the material.
The electric susceptibility is a measure of how easily the material can be polarised by an electric field. Materials with a high electric susceptibility are easily polarised and have a high degree of alignment of their constituent particles, while materials with a low electric susceptibility are more difficult to polarise and have a lower degree of alignment of their constituent particles.
