- The free surface of the ovary is initially covered by a layer of epithelial cells called the germinal epithelium.
- The germinal epithelium is responsible for the formation of primary oocytes before birth in females.

Transformation:
- However, as the female fetus develops, the germinal epithelium layer is used up in the process of forming the primary oocytes.
- These primary oocytes are essential for the development of eggs in the ovaries.

Postnatal Development:
- After birth, the ovary surface is not covered by the germinal epithelium anymore.
- Instead, the ovary is covered by a layer of simple cuboidal or simple squamous epithelium, which provides protection to the ovary.

Function:
- The simple cuboidal or simple squamous epithelium layer helps in maintaining the integrity of the ovary and provides a barrier against external factors.
- This epithelium layer also plays a role in the secretion of hormones and the transportation of nutrients within the ovary.
Therefore, while the germinal epithelium is initially present on the free surface of the ovary and involved in the formation of primary oocytes, postnatally, the ovary is covered by a different type of epithelium for protection and maintenance of ovarian function.
