Demands of Sri Lankan Tamils

  • Equal rights and autonomy: Sri Lankan Tamils have been demanding equal rights and autonomy in the Northern and Eastern provinces, where they are the majority. They want the right to self-determination and the ability to govern themselves in their own regions. This demand is rooted in their historical presence in these areas, which they claim to be their traditional homeland.

  • Language rights: Sri Lankan Tamils also demand language rights. They want Tamil to be recognized as an official language alongside Sinhala, the language spoken by the majority of Sri Lankans. They believe that language is a fundamental right and that the denial of this right has led to discrimination and marginalization.

  • Reparations and justice: Sri Lankan Tamils have also been demanding reparations and justice for the atrocities committed against them during the civil war. They want those responsible for war crimes and human rights violations to be held accountable and brought to justice. They also want compensation for the loss of lives and property suffered during the war.

Explanation of Demands

The demand for equal rights and autonomy stems from the sense of discrimination and marginalization felt by Sri Lankan Tamils. They believe that they have been treated as second-class citizens in their own country, and that their political and economic interests have been ignored by the central government. They want the ability to govern themselves and make decisions that affect their daily lives.

The demand for language rights is rooted in the belief that Tamil is an integral part of their cultural identity. They believe that denying them the right to use their language in official settings is a form of cultural erasure. They want Tamil to be recognized as an official language alongside Sinhala, and for it to be used in government offices, schools, and other public spaces.

The demand for reparations and justice is based on the belief that the Sri Lankan government and military committed war crimes and human rights violations during the civil war. Sri Lankan Tamils want those responsible to be held accountable and brought to justice. They also want compensation for the loss of lives and property suffered during the war, as well as assistance in rebuilding their communities.

Conclusion

The demands of Sri Lankan Tamils are based on their historical presence in the Northern and Eastern provinces, and their belief that they have been marginalized and discriminated against. They want equal rights and autonomy, language rights, and reparations and justice for the atrocities committed against them during the civil war. Addressing these demands is crucial for achieving lasting peace and reconciliation in Sri Lanka.

Read the source given below and answer the questions that follows:Sri Lanka emerged as an independent country in 1948. The leaders of the Sinhala community sought to secure dominance over government by virtue of their majority. As a result, the democratically elected government adopted a series of MAJORITARIAN measures to establish Sinhala supremacy. In 1956, an Act was passed to recognise Sinhala as the only official language, thus disregarding Tamil. The governments followed preferential policies that favoured Sinhala applicants for university positions and government jobs. A new constitution stipulated that the state shall protect and foster Buddhism. All these government measures coming one after the other, gradually increased the feeling of alienation among the Sri Lankan Tamils. They felt that none of the major political parties led by the Buddhist Sinhala leaders was sensitive to their language and culture. They felt that the constitution and government policies denied them equal political rights, discriminated against them in getting jobs and other opportunities and ignored their interests. As a result, the relations between the Sinhala and Tamil communities strained over time. The Sri Lankan Tamils launched parties and struggles for the recognition of Tamil as an official language, for regional autonomy and equality of opportunity in securing education and jobs. But their demand for more autonomy to provinces populated by the Tamils was repeatedly denied. By 1980s several political organisations were formed demanding an independent Tamil Eelam (stat e) in northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka. The distrust between the two communities turned into widespread conflict. It soon turned into a CIVIL WAR. As a result, thousands of people of both the communities were killed. Many families were forced to leave the country as refugees and many more lost their livelihoods.Q. Which is the official language of Sri Lanka?
