Coacervate is an aggregate of macromolecules such as proteins, lipids and membrane and contain enzymes that are capable of converting such substance as glucose into more complex molecules, such as starch. Coacervate droplets arise spontaneously under appropriate conditions and may have been the prebiological systems from which living organisms originated.

Incorrect Characteristics of Protobionts

• Protobionts are the primitive structures that are believed to have given rise to the first living organisms on earth.

• They include two types of structures: coacervates and microspheres.

• Coacervates are droplets that form spontaneously when certain types of molecules are mixed together.

• Microspheres are tiny spherical structures made up of organic molecules.

• The following are the characteristics of protobionts:

a) Reproduction: Protobionts were able to reproduce through a process called fission, in which the parent structure splits into two daughter structures.

b) Separation of Molecules: This option is incorrect. Protobionts were not able to selectively separate molecules from their surroundings.

c) Partial Isolation: Protobionts were partially isolated from their surroundings due to the presence of a lipid membrane that enclosed their organic contents.

d) Maintenance of Internal Environment: Protobionts were able to maintain an internal environment that was different from their surroundings. This was facilitated by the presence of a selectively permeable membrane that allowed certain molecules to pass through while blocking others.

• In conclusion, the incorrect characteristic of protobionts is that they were able to selectively separate molecules from their surroundings.

Coacervates were unable to maintain an internal environment i.e., they didn't show homeostasis but they could reproduce by either budding or binary fission, that's why 'd' is correct.
