Calculation:

Let’s assume the quantity of salt solution is x grams.

Given, 300g of salt solution has 40% salt in it.

Hence, the salt quantity in it = 40% of 300g = (40/100) x 300 = 120g.

Let’s assume y grams of salt should be added to make it 50% in the solution.

Hence, the salt quantity in it after adding y grams of salt = 120g + y.

The new solution quantity = x + y.

As per the question, the new solution concentration should be 50%.

Hence, (120g + y)/(x + y) = 50/100 = 1/2.

120g + y = (x + y)/2.

240g + 2y = x + y.

y = x - 240g.

By substituting the value of y in the above equation, we get

y = 300g – 240g = 60g.

Therefore, the quantity of salt that should be added to make 50% solution is 60g.

Hence, the correct option is A) 40g.
