How can I manage time during GATE 2017 (ME) exam to get the maximum ou...
First up, kudos to the questioner for posting this incredibly important query!Time management is something that is very crucial for GATE and something that most people overlook. GATE paper, as everyone knows, contains questions of varying difficulty. Thus, it is kinda obvious that more time needs to be given for questions that are lengthier and more concept-oriented. I followed certain tips for managing the time.● Just like you do for any normal exam in college, simply skim through the entire paper in the first one or two minutes. By ‘skimming’, I don’t mean that you’ve to go through each and every question. Pick 4–5 random question numbers, read through them carefully, check out the options, decide if it’s tough or not and move on. This is simply to get a feel of how difficult the paper is. If you feel all the questions are manageable, then that’s going to be a huge boost in confidence for you. Chances are that the entire set is going to be manageable for you.● Do not plan earlier that since it’s 65 questions and 3 hours, I’ll spend approximately 3 minutes with each question. Because that’s never going to be the case. For some questions, you can answer simply looking at the question itself. For some others, you may even have to take up to 10 minutes. Pre-planning and going will end up being a bad idea if things do not happen according to your plan.● Most people would ask you start answering questions from the portion you’re most comfortable with. I wouldn’t recommend that. Instead, start with the part that is easiest. And that’ll be the Aptitude part. Almost all GATE question papers are set in such a way that most of the easy questions will be at the beginning. This is to make sure that the candidate is more than comfortable and not tense at all. Plus, if you practice aptitude questions beforehand, you can complete all of them in maximum 5 minutes. There you go, major confidence booster! :)● Practice huge number of tests beforehand. You can access chapter-wise tests, mock tests and past year papers simply by searching on Google “ECP EduRev GATE 2017 Online Test Series”● Now, assuming you have already gone through many question papers, you would already have understood that most of the questions are tricky and most of the mistakes you’ve made are totally avoidable. I’ve felt like kicking myself sometimes. To manage this, you’ll need to read the questions fast and carefully. Yeah, you’ll need practice for that. Don’t overlook the twists.● Now, a clich advice. If you get stuck at a question, do not panic. Try for around 3–4 minutes. Still, if you’re not getting the answer, move on. Do not panic, and move on.● In my case, after two hours, I had completed around 50 out of the 65, I’d read the entire paper at least once, and I’d rechecked all the answers I wrote. Also, I’d left around 10 questions for review. Remaining 5, I had no idea how to solve. Having got 50 of them right, now I had enough confidence to chuck the 5 and concentrate on each of the remaining 10. I had 60 minutes and 10 questions. I started with the ones that looked easy and worked my way up. I could answer 9 of them with 10 minutes left. Again, I checked all the answers I had marked and I was satisfied with the way I answered. Thus, my advice to GATE aspirants is, to manage time more efficiently, start building confidence. If you’re confident about the subjects you know, GATE is just a test of your mettle, which I believe, anyone can easily pass.
