In Drosophila, the gene for eye colour is present on the X chromosome. When a red-eyed female was mated with a white-eyed male, a total of 100 progeny were obtained – 50 females and 50 males. Of the 50 females, 25 were red-eyed, and 25 were white-eyed. How many of the male progeny were red-eyed?
  • a)
    0
  • b)
    10
  • c)
    20
  • d)
    25
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
In Drosophila, the gene for eye colour is present on the X chromosome....
25 males will be containing red eyes.
Explanation:
In Drosophila eye color is an X-linked trait. Red color is dominant while white color is recessive. When a red-eyed female was mated with a white-eyed male, a total of 100 progeny were obtained – 50 females and 50 males. Of the 50 females, 25 were red-eyed, and 25 were white-eyed. 25 males will be red eyes. Only half male progeny will get red eyes due to X chromosome contribution from female parent and rest male will be white eyes in color.

In Drosophila, the gene for eye colour is present on the X chromosome....
From this information, we can infer that the red-eyed female is heterozygous for the gene for eye color (XRXr) and the white-eyed male is homozygous recessive (XrY).

When a heterozygous female is crossed with a homozygous recessive male, we can use a Punnett square to determine the possible genotypes and phenotypes of the offspring.

The Punnett square for this cross would look like this:

Xr Xr
XRXr XRXr
XrY XrY

From this Punnett square, we can see that all the female offspring will have red eyes (XRXr) and all the male offspring will have white eyes (XrY).

Therefore, out of the 100 progeny obtained, 50 will be red-eyed females and 50 will be white-eyed males.
