This means that when Sodium Carbonate is reacted with Hydrochloric Acid it forms Sodium chloride (salt) and Carbonic acid which is unstable and forms CO2 and H2O. This makes the solution acidic which means that when phenolphtheline is added to the solution it turns from pink to colourless.
