During ventricular diastole, the ventricles relax and expand, causing the pressure in the ventricles to drop below the pressure in the atria. This pressure difference causes the mitral valve (which separates the left atrium from the left ventricle) to open, allowing blood to flow from the atrium to the ventricle. The semilunar valves (which separate the ventricles from the pulmonary artery and aorta) are closed during this time.
