Solution:

Given, the money collected by the merchant is represented by x4 x3 8x2 ax b.

Let the number of persons who contributed for this service be x2 1.

We know that the sum of the roots of a polynomial equation is given by -b/a, where a and b are the coefficients of the first and second degree terms respectively.

Therefore, the sum of the roots of the polynomial x4 x3 8x2 ax b is -(-8)/1 = 8.

We also know that the sum of the roots of a polynomial equation is equal to the number of persons who contributed for the service.

Hence, x2 1 = 8

Solving this equation, we get x = 3.

Therefore, there were 3 persons who contributed for this service.

Now, we can find the value of a and b by using the other given information.

The polynomial can be written as x4 + x3 + 8x2 + ax + b.

We know that the sum of the coefficients of a polynomial is equal to the value of the polynomial when x = 1.

Hence, (1 + 1 + 8 + a + b) = (x4 + x3 + 8x2 + ax + b) when x = 1.
