UPSC CSE Prelims Exam Syllabus and Marks Weightage:
The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) Preliminary Exam consists of two papers: General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (CSAT). The syllabus for each paper is as follows:
1. General Studies Paper I:
The General Studies Paper I covers a wide range of subjects and is designed to test the candidate's knowledge of current events, history, geography, polity, economics, science, and environmental issues. The syllabus for General Studies Paper I includes the following topics:
a. Current events of national and international importance
b. History of India and Indian National Movement
c. Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World
d. Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
e. Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
f. General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change
g. General Science
Marks Weightage:
The General Studies Paper I carries a total of 200 marks, with each question carrying 2 marks. The weightage of marks for each topic may vary from year to year, but on average, the distribution is as follows:
- Current events: 15-20 marks
- History of India and Indian National Movement: 15-20 marks
- Indian and World Geography: 15-20 marks
- Indian Polity and Governance: 15-20 marks
- Economic and Social Development: 15-20 marks
- General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change: 15-20 marks
- General Science: 10-15 marks
2. General Studies Paper II (CSAT):
The General Studies Paper II, also known as the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT), is designed to test the candidate's aptitude in comprehension, logical reasoning, analytical ability, decision-making, problem-solving, basic numeracy, and English language comprehension skills. The syllabus for General Studies Paper II includes the following topics:
a. Comprehension
b. Interpersonal skills, including communication skills
c. Logical reasoning and analytical ability
d. Decision-making and problem-solving
e. General mental ability
f. Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.)
g. Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc.)
h. English language comprehension skills (reading comprehension, grammar, etc.)
Marks Weightage:
The General Studies Paper II (CSAT) carries a total of 200 marks, with each question carrying 2.5 marks. The weightage of marks for each topic may vary from year to year, but on average, the distribution is as follows:
- Comprehension: 20-25 marks
- Interpersonal skills, including communication skills: 10-15 marks
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability: 20-25 marks
- Decision-making and problem-solving: 20-25 marks
- General mental ability: 15-20 marks
- Basic numeracy: 15-20 marks
- Data interpretation: 15-20 marks
- English language comprehension skills: 10-15 marks
