In sickle cell anaemia RBCs become sickle shaped which are not supportive for the growth of malarial parasite Plasmodium so it provides immunity against malaria disease.

In sickle cell anaemia as the name suggests, the RBC becomes sickle like( in shape).
The RBC become brittle and often break down.

The patients of sickle cell anaemia and sickle cell trait (the heterozygous condition) do not suffer from malaria because of lack of space, deficiency of oxygen and deficiency of pottasium ions.

Sickle cell anaemia is thus observed more commonly in Africa because it saves life of a patient suffering from malignant malaria caused by plasmodium falciparum which is frequently also observed there.

It can be viewed as a case of natural selection where the patients without sickle cell anaemia or trait die with malignant malaria while those who have it survive.
