  Suppose the worker remained idle for x days . Then , he worked for (60−x) days.
∴        20(60−x)−3x=280
⇔     1200-23x=280

Let the number of days he worked be x.
Then, the number of days he was idle = (60 - x).
Now, according to the question,
20x - 3(60 - x) = 280
⇒ 20x - 180 + 3x = 280
⇒ 23x = 460
⇒ x = 20
Therefore, the number of days he was idle = (60 - x) = (60 - 20) = 40 days.
